Preparation

Cleaning: All parts must be chemically or mechanically cleaned, film free, by a recognized cleaning specification.

Pre-Treatment

- Plastics: Use adhesion promoter recommended by substrate manufacturer to improve adhesion.
- Porous Surfaces: Apply a primer/sealer. Inquire about Cosmichrome water based primer for Styrofoam and other porous plastics.

You will need to have an air compressor with filtration to remove moisture. A gravity fed paint sprayer gun for the base and top coats is available if your shop does not already have one.

The process should be done in paint, but a type of catalytic plating.

Application Methods: conventional or HVLP spray
Recommended dry film thickness: 1.0 mil

Storage: Store at ambient conditions and away from open flame.

General Preparations For Various Surfaces

While the particulars and materials used for metalizing any particular substrate may vary from one to another, the general procedure I the same for all materials. One must prepare the surface so that it has a glossy appearance that will accept the catalytic plating.

Each surface is therefore base coated (if the surface is very porous, e.g. wood, it may have to be primed first before base coating) so as to present a brilliant appearance to the Cosmichrome intermediate coat. The properly prepared surface has a smooth, dust-free, and wrinkle-free basecoat, which is completely cured/dried.

If the basecoat is not thoroughly dry the deposition of the Cosmichrome coat will not be clean and uniform. Drying may be accomplished in many cases by allowing the item to air dry overnight. In other cases it is necessary to bake the finish for a short period of time. Heat sensitive surfaces must be air-dried.
